Hot Cocoa

Dylan just told me that I look like a little kid when I'm drinking my hot cocoa. He says it's obvious to him that I'm enjoying every bit. I guess I get a little giddy about it.

Since you guys always have the answers to everything, I'm asking you to teach me. Teach me the art of hot chocolate making. What are the best brands? Or should I go from scratch? Is there a quick way to make it from scratch? What about add ins? I obviously like the marshmallows, but that may be because my Swiss Miss mix just isn't sweet or tasty enough on it's own. Anyway, please share your yummy, chocolatey knowledge. Thanks.

I love hot chocolate! I have no favorite brand but there is a wonderful creation called the Cocoamotion machine by Mr. Coffee. It makes the most creamy, frothy, and perfect cup of hot chocolaty goodness you'll ever have. (There is another one by Back to Basics called Cocoa Latte.) Both machines are about 20 bucks or if you save those Bed Bath and Beyond coupons, it is quite affordable. We love ours and use it all the time in cold Michigan. Also, if you add a bit of creamer to any cup of hot chocolate it is a bit creamier.

Hey I saw your blog through Christina's and I love your Etsy shop! My husband makes hot chocolate from scratch on the stovetop using milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla, and dark chocolate chips (if you like it rich). You'll never go back! Have a great day!

The BEST topper for Hot Chocolate are the Williams and Sonoma Handcrafted marshmallows. They come out seasonally (they're in stores now) and they are worth every penny!!!

We just discovered the yummy Stephen's peppermint hot chocolate. It's so good! It has little bits of candy cane in the mix! Yummy!

I'm not fancy, but I LOVE tons of whip cream on top of my hot chocolate. (you know the fun spray kind) I've been drinking it a lot lately so I was happy to see you mention it on your blog. My cousin made it for me a lot when I was sick once and I always think of that.

I swear by carnation.

Have you ever heard of a "tim tam slam?" Its australian. Tim tams are a great little chocolate covered biscut with soft chocolate in the inside. (you can order them online from texas.) Well, Aussie roommates noticed my love for hot chocolate, and made me try it. You bit of a little corner and then the corner kiddy corner to that, then you suck hot chocolate through the tim tam, and right when you get the hotchocolate through to your mouth you shove the tim tam into your mouth. ITS HEAVEN, the hotchoclate, the melty chocolate, the sweet from the biscut. True aussies would use Milo, be we can only ever find the asian milo which they say isn't as good as the australian milo.

Its so good I came out of lurkdom to share it.

Check this website out: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=180&f=24906

I have the cocoamotion, but this one looks awesome too. I am in love with Stephens Mint Hot Chocolate. I use our cocoa machine also, and I use half milk and half water when I make it to get it just creamy enough. Then I add marshmallows AND whipped cream! I haven't had any yet this year. I'm out--I need to order the Stephens since they don't have it here. It's worth every penny, I'm telling you!

Stevens milk chocolate hot coco mix...with homemade marshmellows cut into the shape of mini stars...instead of stirring with a spoon, stir with a candy cane...it will add a hint of minty goodness to your mug of hot coco....mmmmm!

I think that "Please share your yummy, chocolatey knowledge," is probably the funniest line I have ever read.

Candace...My Mama makes a MEAN hot chocolate. She makes it every year for Christmas for all of us kids. I'll have to sneak you a can. And then you can ask her how to do it!!!!

I've got a homemade mint hot chocolate recipe that we got from Scott & Karen Lee in Rexburg. I'm not home right now, but if you want it, email me and I'll send it to you when we get home. It's creamy, rich & oh, so yummy...and it saves nicely in the fridge to last you a while.

Ditto o the Cocomotion. I use Ghiradelli ground chocolate (comes in a can), milk and a little sugar. Of course with marshmallows, full sized. We're crazy about it. 2nd choice is Godiva...Yum. Vicki at hollyhocks.typepad.com

The best hot cocoa I have had was made by scratch using cocoa powder. but if you find a great mix let me know! (it beats standing at the stove stirring the dang thing!)

Here is my recipe and I promise you will love it. I think the trick is buying one of those awesome cocoa latte machines. We have the Back to Basics brand and I love it so much that I bought a second one (at a thrift sale) and we have the two of them going all of the time)

Amy’s Favorite Cocoa Mix

4 cups nonfat dry milk powder
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup non-dairy coffee creamer
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 (4 ounce) package instant chocolate fudge pudding (I just use the Aldi chocolate pudding mix)

1. Place all ingredients in large bowl.
2. Stir together with a wire whisk.
3. Place mix in a sifter and sift to make a really fine powder.
4. This really make sure everything is really combined.
5. Store in a sealed container.
6. Add 1/2 cup of mix to an 8oz.mug filled with water (If you don’t like a rich cup of cocoa, stick to 1/4 cup of the mix)
