Smocked Sundress

The past couple nights I've been sewing some clothes for Sadie. Again, ignoring my housework & working on building up her spring/summer wardrobe. I was excited about making this smocked sundress from the Weekend Sewing book by Heather Ross & figured that I'd better get on it before my excitement for the project got pushed to the side. I triple heart that book by the way.

This fabric choice in not traditionally me, but I was envisioning this dress when I purchased it & I think it came out looking really great. The elastic thread is incredible! I love it. The dress came together really quickly. I'm sure I'll be making a few more of these before the summer hits.

Sadie was too excited about it & even though we're having a bit of a chilly day, she wanted to wear her new dress to school. So, leggings below & cardigan up top & off she went.

u are always being the coolest Mom. I am glad you are enjoying yourself while raising a fine young lady. These moments will construct your daughter's soul!

That dress is so sweet. Perfect fabric choice! Should I be scared of the elastic thread? Is it hard to work with at all?

Thanks guys!

Sara - No! Don't be afraid. It is super easy. You just hand wind the elastic thread around your bobbin & keep your regular thread on top & stitch your lines that way. then you spray it with water & iron it and it shrinks up so nicely. It really couldn't be easier!

This turned out fabulous! I've had that book for a few weeks now, but have not yet made anything out of it. This dress in on my "to-make list" for my daughter.

Did you have any sizing issues? My girl is 4, but is tiny in the chest. Suggestions?

That looks so cute. I made one too but with thin straps and I like how you did yours thicker, it looks way better! Great job and blog too!

giddygoat - this pattern is really great because you completely customize it to the wearer. There isn't a pattern to cut out & you make the top smocking part the exact measurement of the child's chest.

Elastic thread is easy you say? Can you point me to a video tute or make one of your own please, because I just don't understand. I'm a visual learner!

What a coincidence that you made this type of dress. I am making one for my daughter.

Hi!

Did you use the Heather Ross instructions or the House on HIll Road instructions for the smocking? I have tried the Heather Ross instructions twice, with marginal results. Smocking didn't tighten up. Do you iron on the elastic side? Any help you mention would be soooo appreciated.
