I've Got a Few Questions For You

Sandra sent me this package of beautiful vintage sheeting pieces all the way from Switzerland! I can't think of mail that is much better than this. Thanks, Sandra. You are a dear & you made my day for sure.

So, on the topic of vintage sheets. I am having the hardest time finding a thrift store here in Vegas that has a good linens selection. I even had a reader e-mail me this week asking for suggestions for good thrift shops here in town. I have been to half a dozen or so shops looking for the goods & have not found one I love. Okay locals, where are the thrifting hot spots?

Now, I think spring has hit the desert already. Which means that summer is coming soon. I've started thinking about warmer clothes for the girls. I plan to make lots of skirts & dresses for them & I'm trying to find some capri length leggings to go under. What are your favorite brand leggings for girls?

Also, I'm considering finally purchasing a much needed new vacuum cleaner. I am using my mom's dyson while we live here. I love it, but hate that it's so tricky to take the hose off to vacuum around the edges. I like to do that as I go along & it's really quite a pain w/ the dyson. What vacuum cleaners should I be considering? Know of any good deals?

Thanks so much! You are a big collective group of girlfriends & I love to hear your advice & opinions. Have a great weekend all!!

P.S. What to see something cute? Go here.

Im a fan of Hoover. Love them! As for leggings, I buy what is cheap...and have you ventured to the E. Charlston thrift stores? I hit up the Savers and the Charleston outlet I think it is called??? Somewhere on Charls. and maryland pkwy area... (south side of charlston)But, I feel your pain...not very good finds here...the city isnt old enough! lol! I also always go to savers in Hendreson on Marks and Warm srpings....good luck!

I totally agree, it's hard to find a good thrift store! I also go to the Savers on Warm Springs from time to time, but it's been a little while now.

As for vacuums, look online, especially Amazon. I personally have a crappy vacuum, but close enough; I went searching for a steam cleaner and found the best rated one online for $50 less than Best Buy (which usually has decent prices) AND free shipping....and it was at my front door within 2 days.

Oh and last but not least, make you own leggings! They are super easy!

I love Childrens Place for leggings for little girls, they are super cute and they wear and wash well.

Vegas is a terrible place for thrift shopping...finding good used childrens books is a nightmare.

We love our Oreck. Great store on the corner of Warm Springs and Stephanie....

I adore leggings for under my daughter's dresses and skirts. I usually just pick them up at Target. Their Circo brand holds up well and is usually pretty inexpensive. You can usually catch them in the off season for a couple of bucks a piece and they range in lengths and colors.

leggings (i have no tips on the rest...):i was just at H&M today (we're in town) and they have a rack of $4.95 leggings. i think that's pretty cheap, no? also, target usually has some good ones. i've even found them t wal-mart (garanimals brand) but they're hit or miss.

Get a roomba. It vaccuums for you!!! :) I love mine and it does a great job on my floors, but you can't really vaccuum the couch or anything with it. It also will go under the bed to get those hard to reach places.

I have a Miele Carina and I LOVE it. Very quiet but works great. I have mostly hardwoods in my house and it is especially great on them.

I really love my Dyson. Actually it's funny you mentioned it because I thought mine died the other day. It just shut off and I was so sad. But I called Dyson and the guy taught me all these cool things about the vacuum I didn't know, including this easy switch that takes a tube off which held about 3 Mardi gras bead necklaces!! haha I guess it was super clogged and the vacuum auto shuts off for an hour so the motor doesn't over heat. Anyway-I love it and the customer service is awesome. I like when companies have an awesomely designed product that works! I guess I just should have read the manual ;) I have the older Animal vac...the purple one. Maybe the hose on the others are harder?

I love H&M and target for tights...because they are cheap and basic.

As for thrifting....I hear you. I've found cool furniture and other things, but fabric is really hard. I think the privately owned really weird ones are usually the best though. The most 'Unique' haha.

The circo brand at Target for leggings are inexpensive and wash well. Walmart brand is a waste of money because though inexpensive they fade after just a few washes.

I just had to delurk to comment on the vacuum question. We have a Eureka Boss Smart Vac and I love it. I am a self-diagnosed compulsive vacuumer, I vacuum twice a day. We bought ours at Wal-mart. This is actually our second one. We had our first one for about 3 years and it made it through two moves. A piece broke in the last move that did funky things to the belt and I still used it for about 3 months broken. We looked on Consumer Reports, cause let's face it a vacuum is a big investment, and the Boss out-cleaned Dyson by 40%! It was ranked number two, number one was over $400. It isn't bagless but bag cleaners vacuum better and are better for allergies. It is super easy to change from floor to hose just a the twisting of a dial. Like I said, I LOVE MINE!!!

Why not make the leggings. Some cute stetch cotton with stretch lace at the bottoms. Should be a quick and easy project and you could pick the colors you wanted to go with the skirts/dresses that you make.

I have a Dyson and I just think it's the best. I'd never choose another brand after having one.....just my two cents worth :) Anita. x
PS. I thought my Dyson-love was a bit over the top but Lavina (above) takes the cake! Vacuuming twice a day - now that's extreme cleaning! I'm afraid I'm not quite up to that standard.....

I like Carters or Circo leggings. Both brands you can find cheap on sale and in a variety of colors. I also like to buy the circo shorts(that are so short I'd never let my daughter were them alone) to wear under her skirts all summer. Your girls might enjoy those in that Vegas heat.

I also have the Smart Vac(Eureka). It's not my favorite, but the price was right(much less expensive than my favorite). It is a consumer reports best buy. If you are looking for Consumer Reports info without paying for it, you can go to Greenerchoices.org They rank everything on a "green" scale, but you still get a lot of their info about best buys and cleaning power. You should check it out to see what you're interested in.

I wanted to say hello, and suggest that you pick up some leggings from Gymboree. They wear super well, and are made of a nice weight cotton. My daughter lives in them! On sale they're reasonably priced. Also, I have my dream vacuum, a Miele. It's super pricey, though. My husband was shocked when I told him how much it cost. But that was 7 years ago. It's still in great shape and has a HEPA filter that we really needed because of my daughter's sensitivities. A friend of mine found one on Craig's List for a more reasonable price.

I, too, live in Vegas and wish to have a complete list of great vintage thrift stores. Having two small kiddos limits my browsing time, as one can imagine. Savers tends to be too pricey for me. Really? I enjoy Goodwill, Salvation Army and Catholic Charities. There are multiple locations and some also have discounted days. Yippee!

Leggings? Make your own. Search 'legging tutorials' and you will be amazed.

Vacuum? I sweep the floors. My husband had major allergies, no carpet for us.....
