Finished another dress for kids clothes week. This one is for Claire. I didn't use a pattern again. Definitely had some hang ups along the way & it looks a bit different than I intended it to, but I love it. Still, I'm thinking that maybe I need to try to follow some patterns. Going without can be a bit of a headache at times, but I love not spending the money on a pattern. Aren't I cheap?
I based this one off of another dress of hers that I like a lot. It's elastic around the neck so it goes on & off really easily. The dress I was copying had a elastic gathered waist as well, but I ran out of elastic when I messed up the neck a few times. Also, the pleat is something I added because I made the neck hole too large. In the end I think the pleat was a happy accident. I like it as it is now. A lot. And messy braids? Don't even get me started on messy braids! :)

this post made me smile!! It is really cute, I love the large plaid it is perfect for the style.
I love the pleat... it's funny that it was originally unintended. Happy accident indeed! :)
I love this!! I really want one in my size :)
Great job, I just started a dress today with no pattern. Hope I have an accident like yours :)
I want one in my size too! That dress is too cute.
did i say neck hole? i really did. oh my.
Love it! The pleat was definitely a happy accident, it makes the dress!
this is so pretty, i love it! it's like the little girl version of this lovely top by flourclothing: http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=493
I like the pleat a lot. Way to go! Best part, Claire seems to like it too. :)
love love love it! sewing without patterns is like an unplanned road trip! i love it! and you can do it at home while the kids are sleeping. no gas involved!
I love happy accidents! The pleat is just gorgoeus, my favourite part!
Its very very cute. If you want basic patterns but not the cost - check out childrens clothing books on ebay - i got a great second hand one with patterns that you copy & scale up and gives you all the basic shape templates toexperiment with! Though I admire your confidence to just go for it!!
Oh that last picture, Candace! She's too much cute! The dress suits her so well.

i think that it looks great! to hell with patterns! oops, sorry pattern designers, i didn't mean it.
the fabric is great and your little girl looks adorable in her new dress.
Oh, I love it! I hope you figure out how to make it again, so that you can post a tutorial on how to make it so I can make one! :-)
That's how I avoid buying patterns, I scrounge up all the free tutorials I can find online (there are TONS for girls dresses and clothes, not as much for anything else and hardly any for menswear) I get the benefit of a guide like a pattern without the cost or sometimes difficult to understand or modify side effects of a store bought pattern.
I have that kind of fabric for a long time in my stash and didn't know what to do with it.Except is brown, not red,but now I know what will I sew next!
love the pleat-it really completes it. The whole dress is so darn cute.
Candace~ Look at how big Claire is....I hope everything is going well. I miss Sadie like crazy......I hope you ALL are doing well!
