Soft Baby Rattles
We have a few babies in the family that need gifts so I made each of them a Soft Rattle from Lotta Jansdotter's book Simple Sewing for Baby. You know I love that book right? If I ever have another baby, I plan to go through & sew everything in that book.
Anyway, the thought of how much money gets spent this time of year makes my stomach uneasy & I figured the 1 year old & under crowd would be more than happy to receive a handmade gift made from supplies I already had on hand.
I think they are awesome & It was fun to choose the fabric specifically for each niece & nephew. :)

Such cuteness! I always love your fabric choices.
Oh these are beautiful. Makes me want a peanut to sew one for. Perhaps I can just make one for a friend... that sounds easier :)
SO cute. What do you use for the rattle part?
They are lovely. I have a similar fabric to the middle one, from Ikea of all places! Not used it yet but you've given me the idea now... I'd also like to know what makes the rattle?
I love these! I've been looking for something to make for my husbands baby cousins. These are perfect!
These are sweet little baby gifts. So lovely!
Ooh! So neat. Makes me wish I could sew.
Thanks everybody! I hope the babies like them. :)
To answer your questions, I put a jingle bell inside the head to make them rattle.
Candace these are just so cute!! I too have made about 80% of all my christmas gifts this year and the great thing is - everyone always loves handmade best! :)
Yes! Such cuteness!
I have that book!! I tried to make them once, but I had trouble with the bell, and getting the placement right - any suggestions?
So, I put the bell in the head, right under the ribbon ears. Once it's stuffed in there tight with the batting, it won't really jingle anymore like a bell. But it does make a little bit of a clicking noise that I think babies will be happy with & it's not loud enough to bother parents to much!
I didn't have time to source out any other type of rattler, but i'm sure there's something out there. May try asking an employee next time i'm at the craft store.
i want one!!! brynnly is very into toys, so much more than the others ever were, but she bangs them against her head and gets hurt! these are awesome!!
really cute candace. good for you! babies love stuff like this and you just saved a ton of money!
Thanks so much for the book plug...I have been trying to decide whether or not I should get it...now I think I will. Those rattles are adorable!
wow, they are awesome and exactly what I was looking for as a gift idea for the little ones in my family! I ordered the book right away!! thank you so much for sharing!

Oh, and a merry merry christmas to you and your family, I love reading you blog! <3
Great book. I've made one or two of these rattles as gifts and I hear they are loved by the little ones. I'm pretty sure your over one crowd will love them too.
Merry Christmas Candace! Those are SO SWEET! I bet the babies in your family will love them. :)

I thought about the rattle for awhile, then realized I could use an old baby toy. Found one with a rattler at the thrift store for $0.40. Thanks for the post, my nephew will love this!
These are SO super cute. I hope to make these for a cousin of mine and a few friends. They are adorable! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing these. I saw them on Pinterest and decided to make my own version (http://olymomma.blogspot.com/2011/06/all-pretty-ponies-simple-handmade-baby.html). Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm thinking an empty prescription bottle and some dry beans for a rattler...
It's nice to find a site you can trust. I like the privacy of shopping online, but you never know what sites are okay. Visit Mymiraclebaby.com this site was recommended by a friend so I tried it. They provide a Personalized baby Gifts, Personalized Gifts, Baby Gifts at affordable price.Their service was great! I'm becoming a frequent shopper!
I've put a small bell inside one of the tiny plastic "eggs" you get prizes out of from vending machines-- it doesn't impede the bell and is small enough to hide with stuffing!
How did you get your eyes so perfectly round? Did you use embroidery fabric? Sewn by hand or machine?
Hey guys! I made a few of these for my baby cousin (still in the tummy, but my big cousin's baby shower is this weekend!) I took an Easter egg, filled it about 1/3 of the way with beans, sealed it with super glue, and stuck it in the head.
Just thought I'd share my method! :)
PS- Thanks Candace for this awesome idea!!
You could also use a cat toy cage ball for the jingle. They can be small enough.
Start your day positively and the rest will follow. Please do visit my site.Thank you and have a good day.
