Saturday Song

I got a good response to the song that I posted last Saturday & thought that I may make this a regular thing. I'll share with you the song that I wake up with in my head or something that I've been humming through the week. Sound good?

This week's takes me back to our Idaho apartment when I was either pregnant w/ Sadie or she was just a little baby. I remember seeing this video on Subterranean on MTV2. Remember when we used to stay up to watch that show, Dyl? Good times. :) Anyway, I've loved The Oranges Band ever since. This song is called "OK Apartment". Enjoy!

Summer Paper Crafts For Kids

I am definitely looking for things to keep my kids busy these long, hot summer days & this paper city has been on my list for a while. It's a free printable paper city complete with people, vehicles & helicopters. Available at the Made by Joel blog, which by the way is awesome! I am now a Made by Joel subscriber.

This kept the girls busy for quite some time. We decided to bring out the markers & color the city. Sadie also felt it necessary to give the people faces. Just eyes were not enough for her. I think this one with the glasses is supposed to be Sadie. :)

Another awesome free download is this lace up dolls set designed by my friend Lauralee at Yellow Mums. Lauralee gave a laminated set of these to my girls just before our long car drive across the country when we moved from Ohio to Las Vegas. My girls loved them & still play with them today. They are just so clever & cute! Think how great these would be as a quiet activity to keep in your church bag!

papernstitch

I'm happy to be a part of the current papernstitch exhibition. If you haven't checked out papernstitch before, do it now! It's a great hand picked marketplace. Also a wonderful blog to follow. Add it to your reader, if it's not already there. :)

Weekend Photos

We checked out a new thrift store. It was a fun one. We didn't find anything majorly great, but it was good to look around a new store & this one had really reasonable prices, so I'm sure we'll stop back in again whenever in the neighborhood. I spotted 3 or 4 pyrex bowls & some really pretty milk glass. This was the first store I'd been to that had all the linens packaged up in individual plastic bags. That was interesting.

I left with 3 vintage pillowcases & 3 new packages of tissue paper (2 aqua blue & 1 yellow for wrapping up shop orders) all for just $5.

For locals, this was the Community Outreach Thrift Store at 1304 E. Lake Mead Blvd., N. Las Vegas, NV 89030.

Sunday Photobooth

These damn bangs are driving me nuts! They're way too long. Question is, should I cut them? Or grow them out with the rest of my hair?

Who cares, right? Still it seems to be a big decision. :)

Also, Claire thinks her chap stick is really cool.

Monochromatic

I tried out a few single color vintage scalloped flag garlands. This time in pink & yellow. I think they are pretty. :) Now in the shop.

For some reason I could not sleep last night. I laid in bed thinking about new garlands. I'm excited now. Hopefully you'll see something new from me soon! :)

For Watching While Pressing

Am I the only one that sets the ironing board up right in front of the TV? Not for ironing clothes, silly...it's all craft related ironing of course. :) More garlands coming soon.

Rescued Chairs

I spotted these 2 chairs in the neighbors garbage a few days ago & snatched them up! They need some work, but I see them fitting in nicely at the dining room table that I hope to have someday. I want to have lots of mismatched wooden chairs maybe tied together by color. Maybe something like this.

Old things can be so awesome & you can't beat the cost! :)

Two Down

Sadie lost her second tooth last week. This time I was prepared with the tooth fairy pillow! She got two dollars & some candy. I was super happy with how well the tooth fairy pillow worked!

The tooth had been hanging there so totally loose for a while & I was worried that it would fall out in the strangest places, like in the swimming pool during swim lessons. I was super surprised that Dylan did his daddy job of pulling that sucker out by wrapping some floss around it. Dylan usually won't even look at the wiggly teeth because it gives him the heebie jeebies so badly. I'm still amazed that he stepped it up & popped that sucker out & Sadie was happy that she'd be getting some more money!

Need an awesome tooth fairy pillow of your own? I have a couple available in the shop right now. :)

Repurposing Old Blue Jeans

I was asked to teach a class at church about repurposing old blue jeans. Teaching is not my favorite. Being in front of everybody makes me feel all exposed & self conscious. But luckily the class was full of nice ladies & we had a good time. Funny thing, I was demonstrating how to sew a pot holder & I totally screwed it up. Seriously! Seems like it's not possible to screw up something as easy as a pot holder, but I sure did flip that sucker out & my stuffing was on the outside! Yikes! Oh well. Check out some of the samples that I made for the class:

I Like Summer

Summer is keeping me away from the computer & making it hard for me to come up with blog posts. Sorry about that! But we are having lots of fun, so I'm not going to feel bad. :)

A few things I wanted to mention though:

* Check out this excellent post by Dylan that dives a little deeper into the topic of plagiarism in the handmade community.

* Today is the last day to get your entry in for the $60 CSN Stores Giveaway. Seriously fun shopping spree to be had there, so be sure to get your comment it!

* This carseat cooler is so genius. Check out the tutorial & make your own!

* I'm teaching a class at church tonight about repurposing old jeans. I think this bag is the most awesome thing I came across in my research.

* Root beer bunt cake? Sounds good to me!

* I think these summer bracelets are adorable!

I'll try to pop in again between swim sessions. Keep cool! :)

Scissor Cramped

My hands are upset with me, because I've been pushing them to use the scissors and cut, cut, cut beyond their comfort zone.

Seems that every time I think that the shop is stocked up with flag garlands, I turn back around & they are all sold out. That's okay. I enjoy making them. :)

Be Original - A Copycat Story

A few days ago I was browsing etsy when I came across an etsy seller offering a print that looked exactly like a poster sold by another artist. This awesome, very popular in the design world & very successful poster is familiar to me. I love it. Seeing the copied print made me gasp. I couldn't believe the nerve of this person who had tried to reproduce the original the best she could with what she had available. Sure the typeface was a bit different & it was lacking some cool texture that the original has, but as far as the design, words, placement of elements & the colors it was a blaringly obvious rip off.

I was so mad! That part of me deep down (or maybe not so deep down...maybe just right there on the surface) that gets worked up when I come across something that is obviously wrong & unfair & messed up reacted. It is hard for me to keep to myself when this gets triggered. I must tell the offender & try to set them straight.

Well, when I clicked over to this copycat's shop & started browsing through her other items for sale, I noticed that she had another stolen design. Another really successful one. One I was familiar with. I gasped again in unbelief. Then looking down a little further, my jaw dropped when I saw her copy of our "La La Love You" poster. Sure she changed some of the wording, but it was obviously copied. Obviously!

I couldn't believe how ridiculous this was getting. Three designs stolen from three different artists & that was all that I recognized. There may have been more there in her shop that were taken from others.

That was it! I was ready to fight this fight. I sent her a short convo letting her know that quite a few of her prints looked really familiar & how not cool that was.

She responded with this, "Thanks for the email. Business is Great. I love how artist can all inspire one another. Its all about the reproduction. Best wishes!"

And with that flippant response, I was ready to give this girl a little hell. I let her know that she was stealing. She responded that inspired is not stealing. Which is true. Inspired is not stealing. But this girl clearly was not inspired. Her prints were direct rip offs & I so wish that I could show you side by sides of them. But I'm just not going to do that. With inspiration I think you can sense a hint of the design that inspired, but the new artist infuses themselves into it so much that it becomes an original & not just a copy of what they saw to begin with.

Dylan put it this way...So if I copy somebody's test & change one or two of the answers then I'm not cheating anymore? No! That sounds so stupid! And that's exactly what I was hearing from this girl.

Well, it didn't take very long for me to shake her conscience & she removed the questionable prints.

What I really want to say is this....especially with 2 dimensional designs...be original! The copy is never as good as the original. The original is so successful because it is so sound in it's design. Your copy of it will never be as good. Plus you bring negativity into the handmade community where we should all be supporting each other. We should value each others creativity.

Never browse etsy looking for new ideas for your shop. Never! Definitely browse etsy to see if anybody else is selling this new design you came up with. Definitely browse etsy to see what others are charging for similar items. Never browse etsy to find what others are making & copy.

Much of the time spent on a new product takes place in the mind of the artist before they even touch their supplies & begin making the physical product. Make sure you are spending that time creating in your mind beforehand & not just stealing it from somebody else. Copycats will never be as successful as originals.

Staring Down First Grade

A year round school schedule has been really different for us this year. We are so excited that tomorrow is the last day of school! Today we went to Sadie's kindergarten graduation program. There was a point where I got a little teary. Way, way less emotional than preschool graduation, but still. She's such a big kid now!

I was hoping for a family photo, but Claire was in no mood. Sadie was a little too serious in the first shot:

And here's the happy, more silly one:

I love my family. :)

Desert Companion

A few months ago I was contacted to do an interview for an article that would be appearing in the Desert Companion magazine. It's a local magazine put out by Nevada Public Radio & it is awesome. Reading it always makes me proud to live in Las Vegas. So I was pretty stoked when Alicia Barney contacted me for an interview for her article "The artisan next door".

I, of course, am a shy girl. Not at all used to doing interviews. So I rambled on over the telephone with her for quite a while & when I hung up, I thought. "There is no way any of that made sense." And since a few months passed before the article was published, I forgot a lot of what I had said in that interview. So it was really exciting to finally read it & see that Alicia was able to understand my nervous babbling.

The girls were so excited to see my name in print & I felt super lucky to be included with the other awesome artisans in the article. When I first started the shop, I never would have imagined that stuff like this would be happening to me. It's crazy & so exciting!

You can read the article here. I'm at the very end, so you'll have to click on "Read entire issue online". The article is on page 20. :)

Smocked Sundress - A Favorite

Yesterday I revisited the smocked sundress pattern from Heather Ross. I love these dresses so much. They are so perfect for the summer. Easy on & off. They wash & wear really well & they are super, super comfy & cute!

I picked up this lightweight cotton floral fabric from Joanns during a 60% off sale. I think it was a juvenile apparel fabric. Because it was a bit thin & I didn't want to worry about panties showing through, I lined it with a thrifted lightweight cotton in aqua blue. I already had the elastic thread on hand & so I think this dress cost me around $4.00.

These dresses are super easy to make & look so awesome. The elastic thread is really fun & easy to use. You should make one for your little girl. Thread is 50% off at Joanns starting tomorrow. Why not grab some elastic thread & make one this weekend?!
