Tutorial - Quilted Big Stripe Pillow

Today I'm going to show you how to make this super cool pillow.  I combined white & navy blue solid fabrics to make a stripe design & then quilted the pillow top for an awesome wrinkly texture.

You will need to cut the following fabrics for the pillow front:

3 pieces of navy blue fabric measuring 4 inches by 18.5 inches.
2 pieces of white fabric measuring 4 inches by 18.5 inches.

You will also need to cut 2 pieces of navy blue fabric measuring 13 inches by 18.5 inches for the back of the pillow.

Cut another piece of white fabric measuring 18.5 inches by 18.5 inches.
Also cut a piece of batting measuring 18.5 inches by 18.5 inches.

Lastly, you need an 18 inch x 18 inch pillow form to go inside the finished pillow cover.

Sew the blue & white fabric strips right sides together along the long sides to make the pillow top stripe design.  Trim your threads & press out your seams.

Next we are going to get ready to do the quilting.  Layer the following:  18.5 x 18.5 inch white fabric on bottom, right side down.  Next, place the batting piece in the middle & the pillow front piece on top.  Pin them all together like shown above using quilting pins or safety pins.

Take your quilt sandwich to the sewing machine & begin sewing your quilting lines.  I didn't mark anything.  I just started at the edge of my stripe seams & stitched lines horizontally along the pillow top, using my presser foot as a guide.  I just lined up the edge of my presser foot with the previous quilting line & used that as a guide.  Remove the safety pins as needed.

I used white thread on the white sections of the pillow & navy thread on the navy blue sections of the pillow.  When you're finished quilting it will look like this:

Trim off all the threads & any batting that is poking out.  Set the front piece aside.

Next, take your two backing pillow pieces & hem up one of the 18.5 inch sides on each piece.  Fold over the long side edge 1/4 inch & iron flat.  Then fold over another 1/4 inch & iron flat.  Then stitch in place.  You just have to do this along one of the long sides on both of the pieces of fabric.

Now we are going to sew the pillow front & back together.  Place the pillow front right side up & pin one of the backing pieces right side down to one side of the pillow front, lining up the edges as shown above.

Next lay the other backing piece on top right side down & lining it up with the other side of the pillow.  Pin in place.  Sew around the entire edge of the pillow making sure to stitch through all layers.

Remove the pins & clip the corners of the pillow.  The construction of the pillow cover is now finished & you could put it on your pillow form at this point, but I suggest throwing the pillow cover in the washing machine & dryer first.  It will give it that nice wrinkly quilted texture.  Insert your pillow form & you're done!  The back of the pillow will look like this:

The front will look like this:

I have lots of love for this pillow.  I love the dark blue with the white.  It feels really modern & bold to me and also kind of nautical at the same time.  I hope you'll make one too in whatever colors your little heart desires.  If you do make one, please share!  I'd love to see.  :)

Thoughts While Working on a Quilt

* I loooove this quilt.

* It's awesome.  I would totally be excited to wrap a baby of my own up in this snuggly creation.

* How sweet would a little baby girl look rolling around on this quilt?

* If I had another baby girl, I know exactly what I would name her.

* But if I had a baby, I wouldn't have as much time to be making sweet quilts.  Oh, well.  Whatever will be will be.  :)

This is a custom quilt made for a sweet customer.  As is my hope with any quilt that I send off into the world.  I hope that it is loved and cherished by the family that it goes to.  I hope it becomes a family treasure & is something that when looked at many, many years from now will bring back the fondest memories.

Please remember to get your name into the Make It Perfect sewing patterns Giveaway!  Today is the last day to enter.  I'll be announcing a winner tomorrow.  Good luck!

In My Head

* I'm not sure why photobooth makes me have a glowing white face, but I'll share a mediocre photo with you anyway.

* My birthday is coming up. It's going to be a super special birthday because the date this year just happens to be 10/10/10. I was thinking back, oh 10 or so years ago, when my friend Chanel & I were standing in the little kitchen in their apartment & she was telling me about my "golden birthday". The one that would occur in 2010, when all my tens lined up. We calculated how old I would be & it just seemed SO old & so far away. Now it's almost here & I can't stop thinking about how fast time goes by. How quickly the days & weeks fly by. And, I'm not too thrilled about turning another year older, but I'm not disgusted with my age, like I may have been 10 years ago. :)

* I want these boots from Target.

* I have been hard on myself lately. A little down that I 'm not accomplishing all I wish that I could, even though I am accomplishing a tremendous amount each day. Why, why, why are we so hard on ourselves?

* Our beloved printer that we print posters on gave up the ghost recently. We tried to repair it, but decided to order a new printer instead. We have a lot of fiddling to do to get the new settings where we want them. To get colors to look the way we want them to. It's annoying. But must be dealt with. The lack of sales in the shop due to the posters recent disappearance is bringing me down. I miss those "Etsy Transaction" e-mails in my inbox. I always knew that every sale was really exciting for me, I just didn't realize how much of a mood booster they are.

* I've got this song in my head.

* I'm waiting, waiting for fall, my favorite season, to kick in around here.

* I love all my blog buddies. Thanks so much for reading. Let me know if there is anything you'd like to see here. Have a great day!!

Less Boxy, More Awesome

We found some cute Star Wars t-shirts in the boys section of Target this weekend & they were marked down to 5 bucks. Sadie picked out this R2-D2 one that had a little bit of pink & purple in it. So we bought one in an XS size, but it still seemed huge on her. It's crazy how a boxy tee looks totally normal on a little boy, but super weird on a little girl.

I don't have a before pic, because she was way excited to wear it the next day & there was no waiting for the sun to come out to get a good before shot. So, using a t-shirt from her closet as a guide, I took in the sides a bit & shortened the sleeves. In the same way that I make them night gowns out of adult t-shirts. Check out my tutorial on that here.

You could use this concept to make better fitting t-shirts for yourself & your kids. Just think, if you found an awesome vintage t-shirt that was just way too boxy to look cool. It really only takes a few minutes to alter it & then you have an awesome new piece that fits perfectly.
