Silent Auction

Welcome, welcome to my silent auction for Nie Nie Day. Up for grabs is a funky, cool, vintage patchwork quilt handmade by me.

This is a baby/toddler size quilt or a lap quilt which measures 37" by 42". Also works well as a play mat or a stroller quilt.

Made from vintage sheeting & pillowcase linens in lots of fun colors. Machine quilted with a cotton batting in the center.

Backed in a blue vintage floral print.

I have read the beautiful & charming Stephanie Nielson's blog daily for the last year or so. I miss her. Please be generous in your bidding today to help raise money for her family's recovery. I have started the bidding in the comment section. Please make your bids in the comments & check back to see what the current high bid is. The auction will remain open until Sunday at Midnight EST. Please bid in full dollar amounts. No pennies or quarters, etc.

Once the winning bidder is identified, they'll send money directly to the Stephanie & Christian Paypal fund and I will ship the quilt directly to them. Thanks & good luck!

Also, be sure to check out a room somewhere where a la la love you poster & a set of vintage map blocks are being auctioned off as well.

Amber & Jen have a really super cool tagua nut necklace up for auction over at Just Be custom jewelry!

First Day of Preschool

Well, today is the big day. Sadie's first day of school.

When I got her all dressed & ready, she had to see herself in front of the full length mirror. She kept saying "How adorable do I look!".

She'll be going to preschool 5 days a week with every other Friday off, so it really feels as if she's starting kindergarten. She was very excited & just walked right into class. I really was doing fine with my emotions until I started driving away & holey moley....I cried way more than I expected I would. It's so hard to explain. We're excited to pick her up in a few hours & to hear all about it.

Hair & A School Bag

I go way too long between haircuts (another thing I do to try & stretch our dollars). I usually have about two weeks where I'm hating my hair. Today, I'd had enough of looking like a shaggy dog, so I pulled it back into a ponytail. Only problem is that the front half isn't long enough to fit in the ponytail. No problem, right. I can rock this. I actually do think it looks cute. So this is how I'll be wearing my hair until my appointment Saturday morning.

Sadie starts preschool tomorrow. Oh goodness, am I nervous & excited at the same time. I decided to go with a tote bag for her school bag this year, rather than a backpack. This one was $2.99 at Pat Catans & I just ironed some wonder under to some fabric, traced some leaves, peeled off the backing & ironed it onto the bag. Done! It's a nice sturdy canvas. It fits her folders perfectly & has enough room for art projects and such. We're good to go.

**Just a heads up. I will be holding a silent auction here on the blog this Thursday for Design Mom's Nie Nie Day. All proceeds to benefit the Nielson family. I've been working the past few days on something special. :)

More Questions

Chanel asks: How much do you love me?

Seriously, she asked that! But the answer is...very much. That girl is so funny & so easy to be around. She is honest. Man is she honest. When you are around her she just makes you happy. She has one of the best laughs in the world. I wish we lived down the street from each other. Check out this video that we made her for her birthday. (Her super cute husband gathered videos from all her cool is that!)

She also asked: Does the size of a man's ears REALLY matter??????

Sorta, yeah. By the way, that's in reference to Michael Phelps.

Where do you see yourself (not just physically) in ten years?

In ten years I see myself done having babies. Sadie will be a teenager. Yikes! I see myself continuing to sew, hopefully. I hope to be working with Dylan, supporting him with his career or working on some type of creative venture together. I hope to be in our permanent residence, wherever that will be. With a new vacuum cleaner & a new sofa & a cool backyard. I hope to have improved many of my personality flaws & I hope to have a crazy amount of love for my family.

what celebrity are you most fascinated by and why?

I don't really have much care for celebrities, but we all now that I've loved Martha forever. Do I really need to explain that one?

Happy Day

We were able to spend a few hours with the JCasa crew at the zoo today. We sure love that group of girls. They are so easy to be around & so much fun!

Jennifer sent me home with some lovely vegetables from her garden & a little package of goodies. Inside was this adorable quilt monogram moleskin notebook. Earlier in the day when talking about her back to school shop update I told her that these little notebooks were "to die for". Now I have my own. Thanks Jennifer!

Today I also added some vintage linens to the shop. This pink & white stripe linen tablecloth that I absolutely love with all my heart. Dylan tried to talk me into keeping it. I think I'll pass it along to somebody else. I have a pay down debt goal that is more important to me right now. :(

And another big bundle of vintage fat quarters. There are some great prints in this pack. Perfect for sewing & quilting & what not.

My doily tote also ended up on the front page of etsy sometime this morning. That's always exciting. It's been a great day!!

I also donated to the Stephanie Nielson fund. That says a lot since I don't have much to give to begin with. If you would like to donate as well, go here. I'm sure that every little bit will greatly help them out in their time of need.

Sad News

I can't stop thinking about nienie today. Wondering what must have been going through her mind when she realized that they would be crashing. So glad to hear that they are pulling though & that her family has been right there to help. I can't help but think of how I would feel in that situation & it just makes me cry. The family is asking for prayers & I believe that there will be a way to give monetarily. Look for updates on cjane's blog.

You can see a news story about it all here.

Entertainment Favorites

Rose asks: I want to know what your favorite movie is aside from star wars (a guess?), what your favorite book is (non-craft related because someone else already asked that), and your favorite album if you have one...

Okay. So. Star Wars is not my favorite movie. Dylan grew up looooving Star Wars & I remember watching Return of the Jedi a lot when I was a little girl, but to tell you the truth I get quite sick of all the Star Wars hype. The old movies are fun. Sadie is already a big fan of A New Hope & has asked to be Princess Leia for Halloween this year.

I'm gonna say Bandits as my favorite movie. It's been a really long time since I've seen it too. I think I'll be renting it soon!

As far as books go.....well, I don't really read books. When Dylan read this question he said "Oh no. You're gonna have to tell the whole internet that you don't read books." I swear that "read a book" is on my New Years Resolution list every year. Oh, well. I was into Harry Potter for a while but I still haven't read the last book. Just call me lame. I do enjoy craft books & cookbooks & I looooove magazines, but I'll get to some recommendations for those in another post.

It's hard for me to choose just one favorite album. I have this tendency to get stuck on an album & I listen to it over & over & over & over for months. (It drives Dylan nuts!). So here are three of my favorites:

My latest obsession has been the Mates of State Rearrange Us album. I'm usually not a big fan of female singers, but I can't get enough of these two. In addition, I am fascinated with the fact that they are married w/ two kids. They are currently on tour w/ both kids in tow. What an incredible lifestyle. The album is incredibly good. Sadie has learned the words to many of the songs & sings right along. :)

Ryan Adams Cold Roses is probably my all time favorite. I've mentioned him many times before here on the blog. I think he has the most beautiful male singing voice ever. Listening to this album always takes me back to our Rexburg apartment when Sadie was just a little baby. It was then that I was constantly rockin' this album.

Sparklehorse Good Morning Spider is another favorite of mine. I love all his albums actually. Just depends on the mood I'm in. I started off listening to his It's a Wonderful Life album, which is also amazing. His style may be a little too mellow for some, but it's that combination of mellow & totally raw, gritty rock that I love most about him. As a wise man one taught me..."you gotta have the roll to appreciate the rock". That wise man is my husband.

Anyway. I love music. I'm not as up with all the new stuff now that I have kiddos. I would love to share more of my favorite albums if anybody is interested. Music is however such a personal thing & what one person loves, sometimes others don't. It's all cool though.

Skin Care - It's Very Complicated

I'm going to start answering questions. If there's something you're dying to know, please ask me here. Thanks!

Rachel asks: Your skin is GORGEOUS! You literally glow in your pictures! How do you care for it?

You are going to hate me for this. I really don't do much to my skin. Half the time I don't even put makeup on, but on the days that I do, I don't wash it off before I go to bed. Naughty, I know. In the morning I wash off my makeup with bar soap in the shower. Are you gasping in horror right now? Then I wash my face with Target brand face wash. When I get out of the shower I put on Target brand moisturizer. I am cheap! We are on one income & trying to pay off debts so I buy Target brand everything.

I wish I had some wonderful secrets for you but the truth is that I have good skin genes. My mom has the most beautiful glowing skin & my Dad has great skin as well. All my brothers & sisters got it too. My oldest sister, Heather I think just started wearing moisturizer recently. What's up w/ that? She ended up even better off than me.

I know it may come back to bite me in the butt later, but I just can't afford to buy all the fancy products right now.

Ask Me Anything

I'm feeling quite boring lately & I'm running low on ideas for posts, so I figured that I'd copy Christina & let you all ask me some questions. Please, by all means, ask away! I will answer every single question to the best of my ability in a future post.

(I have NO photos of myself because I'm the one that's always behind the camera. So if there are any photos of me it's just the ones that I take of myself, like this one. My arms are kinda funny because I am holding out the camera & I'm kinda hunched over my kitchen sink with the camera on the window sill. Oh well. Don't laugh at me, okay.)

I Love My Family, Yes I Do

I love my little family...

and my big family...

(I have 4 sisters & 3 brothers + my mom & dad are still together!!)

and Dylan's family.

I'm missing them all a whole lot right about now. I wish we were within driving distance.

Have you seen Dylan's amazing posters that I've been adding to the shop? Here is a sampling of them. Head over to the shop to see the different color combinations that each poster is available in.

BFF poster:

La La Love You Poster:

Mixtape = Love Poster:

It's a Hard World For Little Things Poster:

They are beautiful. I love them all & talk about affordable art! Dylan also just posted his take on our falling in love story today over on his blog. Be sure to head over there & read it for a good chuckle.

Sadie Self Portraits

I love these self portrait drawings of Sadie that I've found laying around the house. I think that second one needs to be embroidered onto something like a pillow or a t-shirt.

My Love Story

The summer time always makes me think about first meeting Dylan & falling in love with him. We met in the summer of 1999, just one year after I graduated from high school. We owe it all to Ammon. He was home for the summer & called me up to get together. We decided we'd go see Star Wars Episode I. Got a call from him about a week later. He was going with a group (all guys) & invited me to come along. I picked up Ammon & we headed over to Bryan Todd's house. Bryan is Dylan's younger brother. I went to high school & had a few classes with him. We knock on the door & this guy swings the door open & says "Well Helllooooo!!!" In a really high pitched, crazy voice. It took me a minute because at first I thought it was Bryan. I then realized that this must be Bryan's brother. He was wearing a Hanson t-shirt. I was convinced that he was a nerd. At the movie we sat on opposite ends of our row of people. I remember him passing an empty box of red vines down to me. I wasn't sure what to think about him.

Dylan was in a band with Bryan & a few other people. I'd go watch them play & there was always a barbecue happening at the Todd house that summer. So we saw each other quite a bit. I was walking at the park w/ my mom one night & I told her that I couldn't date Dylan Todd because I'd probably marry him & my last name would be Todd & our babies would be really white.

It took us a few months to get together. We played video games & I punched his leg when he was beating me. At the Ben Folds Five concert he asked me what classes I was taking for the third time. After one of his band's shows in Patti's back yard, he asked me if I wanted to go to the Coca Cola Factory with them. I mentioned the Beverly drink they had there (tastes like bug spray). He was impressed that I knew of it. I couldn't go because I had other plans already. He worked up some excuse so that he could give me a ride home even though I got a ride there with somebody else. I thought he was sweet. I could tell he was interested in me. We continued like this for a while. I wanted him to ask me out. He didn't have a job & his car was a disaster. I went to visit my friend Zelilah in California. When I got home I called him up and asked him out. We went to dinner & a movie.

A few days later I lured him over to my house with cookies I made. He was supposed to meet the guys to play video games. I think he eventually left that night. I wanted him to kiss me, but he didn't. We made plans for him to come back & we'd watch a movie. The next night we watched Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. But halfway through he kissed me & it turned into a half hour make out session. We were never apart after that. We knew a month after dating that we wanted to get married.

The photo above is our engagement picture. We got married in 2000. I was 20 years old. He was 23. I often wonder about how I made such a big decision at such a young age. I had heard that "you just know", and it's so true. It's the best decision I've ever made. I often think back to the early days. Back before we had kids & all we had to worry about was us. Sometimes I wish we had those days back, but at the same time I think I like the "us" that we are now even more. We've been through a lot. We're solid.

If I could wish for anything in the world, I would wish that everybody could have someone to love them. I mean really, really love them.

Vintage Pretties

I am still working through adding all my leftover market stuff to the shop, but had to immediately list a few of my finds from yesterday's thrift store outing. A sweet as can be, beautiful, beautiful christening gown that I should keep for my own girls' room. But, you know how it goes.

I also put together a big fat quarter pack from all my vintage sheets. I scored a few of these yesterday too. Already washed & put on my new organized shelf.

I love the summer light. So good for photographing these pretties.

Oh Yes I Did

I never imagined that I would have my fabric folded & stacked by color, because I'm just not that organized. But look what I did this weekend. This is a start. I still have some piles that I need to go through & find a place for. My house is in disarray after two months of focusing on the summer market. I'm now ready to go through & organize every room & every closet. My plan is to address one room at a time & make my rounds. First stop: the kitchen.

This weekend:

We took Claire off the bottle. Cold turkey. She's done great. We've had a few sad moments but for the most part she's happy & we're already on day three!

I felt like an outcast & wondered if anybody likes me or if I need to change myself or if I'm not a nice enough person or what exactly is wrong with me. I was in high school all over again. What is wrong with me & why do I bring this upon myself. I'm too old for all that. Got over it & I'm feeling better.

Wished I could have been at this show. Decided that we don't have the money for too much extra stuff like this right now. By the way, Kori of Mates of State keeps a really interesting blog about being on tour with children. Check it out. It's very cool.

What We Do While Claire Naps

Let me apologize about two things: Sorry this is so long. I don't know how to edit these things. Also, sorry about my singing voice. It's well known in our household that I can't carry a tune. Even if it's just "Itsy Bitsy Spider".

Have a great weekend!
